Empirical Research in Logistics and Supply Chain Management Using Big Data
Host: Associate Professor Qian LI
Speaker: Associate Professor Wan Xiang
This lecture combines the big data analysis methods to discuss each component of the
empirical research (theories, methods, results, conclusions, effects, etc.) and the considerations for each component. From the perspective of a international journal editor and a reviewer, the presenter will share research frontiers, hotspots, and mainstream research methods in the field of logistics and supply chain. We hope to help young scholars learn how to apply empirical methods to conduct research projects, write academic papers, and submit to top journals, further answer review comments through the lecture.
Dr. Wan Xiang is currently an Associate Professor, Lifelong Professor and Doctoral Superviso at Fisher College of Business of The Ohio State University. His research areas include diversity management of products and services, inventory management, coordination and cooperation in the supply chain. He has published more than 20 academic papers in sci academic journals including Strategic Management Journal, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Production Economics, Transportation Research ,etc. At the same time, he is the associate editor of Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences Journal and Journal of Business Logistics, as well as the reviewer of more than ten international top-levels such as Strategic Management Journal, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Transportation Research. He was reported by the Wall Street Journal as one of the 12 experts in supply chain big data applications.

Empirical Research in Management: Collecting Big Data Using Scientific Methods
Host: Associate Professor Qian LI
Speaker: Associate Professor Wan Xiang
In the age of big data, data is the foundation of empirical studies. Researchers are able to understand business practices by analyzing empirical data. This seminar discusses the common SCIentific methods of data collection including web crawling, survey, experiments, and archival data.
Time: 09:00-11:30, July 3rd, 2019
Venue: 南京大学工程管理学院 北楼101

Empirical Research in Management: Data Analysis, Endogeneity, and Causalitys
Host: Associate Professor Qian LI
Speaker: Associate Professor Wan Xiang
After collecting data, researchers should investigate research questions using rigorous
methods. The learning objectives of this seminar are (1) to understand approaches to
empirical research (2) understand challenges inherent in observational studies, and (3)
develop a set of research methods to address endogeneity and identify causality.

Review Approaches and Strategies for Future Engineering Management Research
Host: Associate Professor Qian LI
Speaker: Dr. Heap-Yih (John) Chong
Fundamentally, literature review is what already known, and analyse the relevant materials
for the research. This is a common and crucial step for any academic research, even for
industry projects. However, a good review can define the knowledge boundary and need for
future research. It also can develop new hypotheses and theories. In this talk, I will present the all common and practical review methods. Then, I will discuss the review steps and strategies for engineering management. Some actual examples will be elaborated in terms of different needs of review within a paper or as a paper. Subsequently, certain challenges and requirements will be discussed for its contribution, impact, logic and thoroughness.
Dr. Heap-Yih (John) Chong obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2011. Currently, he holds a continuing position
as a Senior Lecturer (Teaching & Research) in the Department of Construction Management, Curtin University. He brings with him a sound understanding of the construction sector. He has a strong track record of coherent research outputs in the top refereed journal articles and has successfully secured a number of competitive research grants from funding bodies in Australia ( including ARC Discovery
Grant) and other countries, such as Malaysia, China, Middle East, and Japan. He has a growing profile and is actively involved in professional bodies and industry engagements. He also receives full sponsorships as a Visiting Professor in Tamkang Unversity, Taiwan (affiliated with Research Development Center of Construction Law), from Jan 2015 until Jan 2017; and Visiting Scholar in Tsinghua University, China (affiliated with Centre of International Construction and Project Management), from Nov 2016 until Nov
2018. To date, 140 publications have been published/accepted, such as 2 books, 7 book
chapters, 81 journal papers and 50 conference papers, with a rapid growth of impact or h-index within the last 5 years as per the indices of the Web of Science (h-index: 13), Scopus (h-index: 15) or Google Scholar (h-index: 17).

Contract Administration for BIM-Based Engineering Projects
Host: Associate Professor Qian LI
Speaker: Dr. Heap-Yih (John) Chong
Engineering projects data need to be digitalized, shared, and used by all project stakeholders
throughout the project life-cycle in a collaborative; and harmonious manner. The future contract administration practice will be open, collaborative, productive and dynamic. With the help of information and communication technology including Building Information Modelling initiatives in the construction industry, a different management of contracts is required to regulate and enforce the new practice, which acts as the first or crucial adaptation mechanism for the transformation. In this talk, I will present current state of procurement systems with BIM and then I will propose a BIM Conceptual Framework. Subsequently, some legal issues and their associated solutions will be discussed.
